The Woman And The Dragon

by Father Brian J. Soliven on Sunday August 15, 2021

Our First Reading for Mass today kicks off with a battle from the last book of the Bible: "Then the dragon stood before the woman about to give birth, to devour her child when she gave birth." (Revelation 12:4). Do you remember the last time we heard about a woman and dragon in Scripture? From the first book of the Bible: "Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, 'Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?'" (Genesis 3:1) That woman lost, ushering in the pain and suffering of Original Sin that marks human existence. It would be the triumph of the woman in the Book of Revelation to undue it all.
